We all hate Maths, seriously. But when it comes to rating girls, you wouldn’t mind doing a bit of simple evaluation, calculation and optimization. Most people in the world would rate a girl using a score of 1 the worst to 10 the best. And the most common criteria used are the look and the body assuming that you haven’t talked to the girl yet. Looking sweet and cute with hot body is a 7. Looking bored but still with a good body is a 5.5. Looking manly and rude without a good body is probably a… sadly, 2. In Hong Kong, if you want to rate a girl, you need to use some HK-specific criteria.
Snow-white Skin
Hong Kong girls like having snow-white skin because it makes them look more vulnerable and feminine which they think men would like. Therefore many of them spend a great portion of their monthly income on stocking up whitening products. Hong Kong girls hope that their skin would be as white and flawless as the snow falling romantically onto the roof of a small little house under a cherry blossom tree in some remote mountains in Hokkaido, Japan (as seen on the TV ads). When doing makeup, a minimum 5mm of foundation or BB Cream that magically turns their yellowish skin into pale white skin is an essential. When strong sunlight shines straight to their face, a scuttle to the nearest covered place is their daily exercise during sunny days.

Celebrity commercials on whitening products are making great impact on HK girls.
Hong Kong girls make such a big effort to keep their skin white, so don’t be too harsh – let’s give them a 7.
Fake Eyelashes
As for eyes, the bigger, the better. Having a pair of big, round eyes is what many Hong Kong girls long for. Not only do you need to have double eyelid (your upper eyelid creases that makes your whole eye appear bigger), but also super long eyelashes to make your eyes look shiny and glowing. So, instead of only applying mascara to lengthen their naturally short eyelashes inefficiently, many of them just go for plastic-made fake eyelashes that make them having double eyelid AND their eyelashes appearing even longer and thicker. For them, fake eyelashes are a win-win strategy.

Fake eyelashes are what turn your natural eyelashes into 20x longer.
After spending hours on gluing the fake eyelashes onto their eyelid (sticking them at the right position and making them firm are not easy), following by applying eyeliner, eye shadow and glitters, a pair of big, sexy eyes are finally done. The score here can be from 2 to 8, depending on how “natural” their eyes look.
3D Nails
Hands and fingers are important, too. Would you want to touch a girl with rugged hands and dingy fingernails? No right? So, Hong Kong girls are smart enough to keep their hands smooth, balmy with beautiful nails. Rather than just putting nail polish, they go for enchanting and… 3D nails, otherwise it would be hard for people to pay attention to their hands.

This cat is really popular in the manicure industry.
If you walk on the streets of Mong Kok or Tsim Sha Tsui, or even inside the trains in Hong Kong, it wouldn’t be hard for you to find girls having a 3D Hello Kitty or 50 kg of beads embodied on their nails. They probably have a 3D Hello Kitty iPhone case as well.
What’s the rating for crazy nails? 1.
Scrawny Legs & Sky-high Heels
On appearance, every Hong Kong girl eats a hell ton of snacks (as seen by the full-of-chocolate-bars cabinets at their office). When discussing about food, every girl says, “Yeah, I eat a lot. I love food!” In fact, when they’re not at the office, they eat only a slender bit of regular food like rice, noodles or meat. Every one competes to be the skinniest, the least weighted while appearing eating a lot just to fool their “competitors” (other girls). They starve themselves just to have a pair of scrawny legs. Then add a pair of 5-inch heels and voila, a taller figure is here and the girls are ready to rock the world!

They are high and they really hurt. But girls like them, and so do men. What could I say?
However, they might be walking like a goose after hours of shopping and dancing because the heels are freaking high. Well, but a lot of people (both men and women) like girls wearing heels. So, let’s give them a 8 (before the goose walk starts).
It’s okay for you to think that I’m naïve. But let me say one more thing: if a girl has all the 4 elements, I think she would be a … 2.
How do you rate girls? Any particular criteria?

Be the first to like this post.
Just going to address the 4 aspects you bring up:
- Pale skin: It can look good in some cases, but colour always looks healthy, so usually the one who has a more natural tint will look far better.
- Eye lashes: It can look good, but it is honestly such a small detail, and you need to be quite close to really appreciate it, that it does not matter. The rating 1-10 is usually made before I would be able to see a girls eye lashes.
- 3D nails: Will automatically deduct a few ‘points’ because it is both silly and poor taste. It also automatically makes me think the girl has the mind of a 5-year old, making her lose further ‘points’. In general the painted motives on HK girls nails are a negative thing, since they rarely seem to consider what looks good on them..
- Thin legs: for the most part this looks good. It may be crazy and unhealthy, but thin is what society tells us that we want. That being said, the girl still has to look soft too, nobody wants a skeleton (even if she is supposed to as thin as one…)
I second this.
Jeppe and Ryan, I agree. As Jeppe said, many people think that tan skin looks healthier and hence sexier.
Eyelashes are hard to notice, but girls care about it a lot. We always want something we don’t own, e.g. Asian girls’ eyes are smaller than Western girls, so many Asian girls are dying to have a pair of big eyes.
Crazy nails is a total turn-off.
For legs, yeah, it’s important to look healthy for them to look attractive. It’s just sad that the fashion magazines keep instilling wrong values into girls’ soul.
I feel the HK perception of beauty is probably just as skewed towards the unrealistic as the perception in the US. As for the 4 characteristics you point out.
-White skin to me is a foreign thing that I just learned about hong kong girls or asian girls in general because here in the states a nice tan is is more desireable. To me as long as your skin looks health is that matters.
-Eyelashes: I really don’t care about eyelashes and I think most guys don’t really care. I think that only matters more among women themselves.
3d Nails- I have to agree with Jeppe above. It’s juvenile, but I guess can be cute in certain situations like Halloween or some festive occasion. Other than that I think normal nail colors are fine. Again I think this falls into the mans category of non importance.
Thin Legs- Again for me legs need to be in proportion and overly thin legs is not really the ideal. I find a lot of the asian models in magazines to be way too rail thin and not very appealing. If that’s your body type than that’s your body type, but one shouldn’t go out of their way to achieve a certain look.
It seems that many guys now think that tan skin is more attractive.
Many men don’t care about eyelashes, but this is what Hong Kong girls really care about. They long for a pair of big eyes like those Japanese or Western girls.
Yeah I’ve noticed that with the desire for big eyes, while it is attractive I see no reason to drastically alter your eyes to achieve it. I really think most men are attracted to what you naturally have. Anything else as I said is just for other girls. While on the subject of eyes, I really don’t get the whole colored contact lense fad. That just seems silly to me. You should rock your own eye color. Plus some of those lenses just look really creepy. Unless you’re cosplaying.
This is crazy. But sadly, it seems to be a characteristic of several different Asian groups that are out there. It almost seems that some of them are obsessing over the fact that they have to be the “prettiest” in order to get a partner.
But good post overall. I like the information that you presented.
Thanks. It’s not sad. It’s just the facts. It’s the culture.
Of course! I feel both sad and not sad for the fact that they go through that for themselves. But its their choice if they feel like starving themselves or whatnot.
Hey Jin, it’s Rich (Dreads from Eng) thought I would check out your writing, not really my topic but well written. I will give you my take, as pretty fashion ignorant guy
Skin- White holds a classic beauty, compliments asian features but for more modern styles I think theres a wider range of tones that suit the look and behaviour. Surfer girls hanging out at beach parties, or musicians playing in the street, or travellers would look too unnatural with white skin.
Eyelashes- Most guys want to know what you really look like, you have longer lashes maybe you have more chance of getting to bed with them on the night, but I think for most guys, less chance of staying there!
Nails- Cute but not in a good way. Like little sister way. Although a little more subtle and combined with a sophisticated classic outfit might be pulled off as tasteful
Heels- Nice for the evening, if you are going somewhere. For the day, nice if you’re a guy who wants a trophy wife/girlfriend, but most guys would see it as too much attention to how you look over comfort. Guys don’t like that. Is there anything we wear that makes us uncomfortable?
And scrawny legs makes alot of guys feel like you are too delicate. Eat something, we don’t want to snap off your legs when we swoop you off your feet
Sadly Jin, I will probably never write on HKgirltalk again haha.
Love ya!
Thanks for your comment, Richie.
Yeah, I agree that skin has to do with the contexts. Different people are living in different contexts, and hence different skin tones. But generally, a darker and tanner skin means that that person is more out-going and keen on sports / beach / travelling, and also more down-to-earth, which a lot of people like.
Your interpretation on heels are cool. Yeah, many girls suffer from pain just to look taller while walking like a goose. I don’t think it’s worth it if you can’t pull the heels off.
No, you will leave me comments again. I just know.
In short, the fact that it is so hard to rate amongst the genders, makes people preferring to stay single.
Appearance: Let me see the before and after makeup. Females who look good regardless of makeup or no makeup gets my vote.
Clothing: Luxury brand products are fine, but don’t have it all up in my face at all times. Heels are good in moderation.
No smoking as well, just brings down a person’s ratings.
Brandnames – haha, agreed.
No smoking, yeah! I almost forgot to mention it. A lot of girls smoke just for the sake of telling people, “Hey, I’m smoking. Want some cigarettes?”. Some of them just want to look cool and you can totally tell.
I fully agree!
A girl can wear a bit of makeup to cover some spots if she wants, but I don’t like being able to see the makeup unless there is a real reason, like going to an event where it is really expected to dress up and do something extra with your look.
I don’t care about brands at all, as long as the girl looks nice, which for some girls can be as simple as a t-shirt and jeans.
Heels can be fine, but only if the girl is comfortable in them! Usually they don’t really make the girl look better, so if she wants to wear them she needs to handle walking in them as easily as a pair of flat shoes.
Girls who smoke will not even get a “1″ rating from me, I won’t even consider them! Smoking is a nasty habit and it makes the girl and anyone around her smell like crap. If I were to kiss one I literally will feel sick because the taste is so repulsive to me!
Jeppe, you hit the points!
